For a year after war came to the city, the Sarajevo Philharmonic ceased operations. And a young oboe student named Lamija Talam left her instrument in its case: There didn't seem much point in trying to make music.

"I just didn't feel like practicing," says Talam. "So I tried to learn English."

Today she speaks fluent English and has just finished her first year as a student at the New England Conservatory of Music.
