Our 14-year-old son pokes his head into our bedroom seven minutes
before the school bus is due. "Seen my pants?" he'll inquire. We
don't have to ask which pair. Same pair he wore yesterday, last
week, last month. Same pair he'll wear tomorrow . . . and tomorrow .
. . and tomorrow.
The pants go with the shirt, the shirt with the windbreaker, the
windbreaker with the cap. The ensemble varies only when Mother is
careless enough to pluck one item off the floor and wash it without
notice. "Now what am I gonna wear?" the 14-year-old will moan in
exasperation.
"You have a whole closet full of clothes," he will be reminded.
"Drawers full of stuff." "That's not the point," he'll say.
