Federal highway safety officials should accelerate the adoption of
a simple, universal child safety seat anchoring system to eliminate
improper installations, which cause thousands of injuries and dozens
of deaths in highway accidents each year, a government panel said in
a report to be released today.
The panel urged the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA) to expedite its testing of an experimental European system
known as ISOFIX that could make all cars and safety seats compatible.
If the tests are successful, the NHTSA should permit the European
system to be factory-installed in new vehicles, said the final report
of the Blue Ribbon Panel on Child Restraint and Vehicle ...
