CANTON -- The Neponset River, so little-known and hard to find
that it is often called "the hidden river" of eastern Massachusetts,
is being rediscovered and reclaimed.
The key is an intensely local, one-brook-at-a-time effort that
relies on citizen volunteers to assess and monitor every water
resource in the Neponset's 323-square-mile watershed, from Foxborough
to the Quincy-Boston line. The project is beginning to pay off after
just 18 months of work.
While years of effort still lie ahead -- and the involvement of
hundreds or even thousands more people ultimately will be necessary
