Fleet Financial Group Inc.'s top investment-marketing executive has resigned abruptly amid an internal investigation of the unit's payment of institutional brokerage commissions.

Michael Rothmeier resigned Monday as managing director of the company's Fleet Investment Services unit. He was escorted off the Fleet executive floor at the bank's Federal Street headquarters later in the day, according to an observer.

Clarke Blizzard, an institutional marketing executive who worked for Rothmeier, resigned a day later, the company said.
