New England Medical Center's long search for a merger partner took
another turn this week when the Caritas Christi network of Catholic
hospitals made a pitch to affiliate or combine with the troubled
NEMC.
The chief executives and some trustees of both NEMC and Caritas
met late Tuesday for several hours to discuss the possibility of
combining the operations, said people familiar with the meetings.
One person acknowledged the discussions are still "preliminary," and
the two sides agreed to continue talking.
NEMC, which has been trying unsuccessfully for months to find a
partner in an era when other hospitals have joined forces, is also in
