WASHINGTON -- Eighteen months ago, a reporter for a little-known
organization called the National Security News Service let the Navy
know it was investigating whether Adm. Jeremy M. Boorda and others
had earned certain medals. Almost immediately, Boorda's top aide
told the news service there was "no story."
So began the tortuous trail that apparently led to Boorda's
suicide Thursday -- and then turned the focus to how the news service
got its information and pursued the story.
"Perhaps it is time for the media to do a little soul-searching
and ensure that morality and ethics are not undermined in the
