Article: From lawn of man, time to sail is short

My response to spring, a reflex of gratitude, is to feed my lawn: plastic bags full of crystallized chemicals with formulas printed on the side showing the mix of fertilizers with poison needed to kill off plants deemed unacceptable by current home and garden standards.

The idea, of course, is for the lawn to grow thick and green, for the dandelions to disappear in that magical way poison has with things, and for the lawn to look . . . what is a lawn supposed to look like, anyway? Much different today than in past ages, I am sure.

As a boat person, I understand that later in the summer, I will rue having a lawn to mow and take care of. In fact, later in the summer, after that first impulse ...
