The only other time I took a cooking course, it was Mrs. Dakin's
home ec. class at Millbury Memorial High. Mrs. Dakin taught me how
to carve grapefruit baskets, how to make Five Can Casserole and how
to treat an egg. "Girls," she'd say, in those days when home ec.
wasn't an option for boys, "always wash your eggs before you break
them. Remember where they came from."
I succeeded in blotting out the above advice and thought I'd
turned myself into a pretty good cook, until I enrolled in Le Petit
Blanc Ecole de Cuisine, the famous cooking school at the 15th-
