Some obervers dismiss it as just another fad, Dalai Lama chic, a
spiritual Macarena that will be blown away by some hot new trend.
But others argue that it is an important development in America's
religious life.
It is Buddhism, a religion born in India more than 2,500 years ago
that today is in vogue from Cambridge to Berkeley.
And whether it is merely fad or a serious spiritual quest, there
is no question that Buddhism has become one of the nation's most
