Heinrich Schliemann seemed destined to bore posterity. A
humorless, priggish self-made plutocrat, he apparently had no other
interests than learning languages, traveling and making money. He
was not the sort of person you'd associate with his astonishing
romantic exploit, excavating ancient Troy.
"Lost and Found," Caroline Moorehead's readable biography, gives
her subject human interest and even a dash of glamour. Schliemann
was 51 when he announced in 1873 that he had discovered the lost gold
