The abrupt retirement of political hired gun Richard Morris from
President Clinton's campaign illuminates vividly the treacherous
waters candidates are forced to traverse, risking grounding even when
they believe they have good charts. Clinton may have thought he was
in open sea the morning of his triumphant acceptance speech to the
Chicago convention. Instead he finds himself embroiled in the tricky
task of damage control.
At one level Clinton was betrayed by Morris. It is difficult to
understand how anyone as politically savvy as Morris was reputed to
be could blithely enter a sordid relationship with someone who by
