Mitsuko Shirai and her husband Harmut Hoell have made more than 20
CDs of art songs. No local store ever manages to keep more than two
or three of them in stock: The label is small, the literature
specialized and the artists are not celebrities. Also,
demonstrably, there are people who will buy a record by Shirai and
Hoell the moment they see it: their records are highly varied
repertory, but uniform in attaining the highest level of musical
distinction. Shirai and Hoell record what interests them, then pass
the tapes on to Capriccio, which issues them regardless of commercial
