Douglas H. Wilkins yesterday was talking about his father, chief
justice nominee Herbert P. Wilkins, and was stumped.
"He's a take-care-of-business kind of guy," said Douglas
Wilkins, 43, an assistant attorney general. "And it would be hard to
think of some really colorful stories about him. . . . As silly as
he gets is when he is playing with his grandchildren."
Gov. William F. Weld yesterday nominated Wilkins to succeed Paul
J. Liacos as chief justice of the Supreme Judicial Court. Wilkins,
66, has been on the SJC since 1972 and, if confirmed by the
Governor's Council, is expected to bring a major stylistic change to
the job of running the third branch of state government.
