It is that time of summer when the sun filters through a thick
August haze, the heat barbecues the city pavement and the old-timers
head for the taverns for a shot and a beer, a boilermaker.
Up on Meetinghouse Hill in Dorchester, a youth worker leads a half
dozen little boys in a game of kickball. The kids run in various
directions. Rules of the game do not rule when the players are that
young, and only the very young seem able to play such games as the
heat and humidity intensify.
Down on Bowdoin Street, two men sweep the sidewalks and gutters.
Attached to an iron fence in front of a vacant lot is a sign touting
