Handsome. Powerful. Intelligent. Loyal. It is easy for
Rottweiler fanciers to list the traits they love in their breed.
But they will all quickly add that this is a high-maintenance
dog, one who needs a strong, experienced and consistent hand. Yet
too often Rottweilers are not getting it. And the consequences
appear in newspaper headlines -- and at the top of lists of bite
statistics.
This month has brought four serious incidents with Rottweilers to
public attention: the 1-year-old boy in Orange, killed; a
21-month-old girl in Springfield, Mo., killed; a 6-year-old boy in
Dorchester, bitten; and an 11-year-old girl in Randolph, who needed
100 stitches after being mauled.
