Article: Rottweilers: not for everyone

Handsome. Powerful. Intelligent. Loyal. It is easy for Rottweiler fanciers to list the traits they love in their breed.

But they will all quickly add that this is a high-maintenance dog, one who needs a strong, experienced and consistent hand. Yet too often Rottweilers are not getting it. And the consequences appear in newspaper headlines -- and at the top of lists of bite statistics.

This month has brought four serious incidents with Rottweilers to public attention: the 1-year-old boy in Orange, killed; a 21-month-old girl in Springfield, Mo., killed; a 6-year-old boy in Dorchester, bitten; and an 11-year-old girl in Randolph, who needed 100 stitches after being mauled.
