Remember "The lady from Twenty-Nine Palms"? It's an old song, and
the town is a real one in California, except the number in the town's
title is for some reason one word.
One word or not, the town with its 29 palms has nothing on
Belmont, where no less than 35 (count 'em) genuine live palm trees
grace a residential street.
They're in front of the house of Cornelius Kelly, gardener par
excellence, who brought them all from Ireland and often uses them in
the Spring Flower Show.
Kelly was the creator of a Flower Show sensation some years ago, a
genuine Irish cottage, complete with thatch roof that impressed the
show-goers but gave the fire marshal a few anxious moments.
