WASHINGTON -- The gay rights movement, at odds with Bob Dole and
disheartened with Bill Clinton, approaches a pivotal juncture this
week as the House prepares to act on a Defense of Marriage Act that
would ban marriages between people of the same sex.
Debate over the bill, sponsored by Dole and supported by
Clinton, will unfold as the gay rights movement enters the
presidential election season with much of its agenda under siege and
its long-term momentum at risk.
With both major parties expected to spurn requests at next
month's conventions to step up support for homosexual rights, the
movement's leaders fear the campaign could stall if a large number of
disaffected gay and lesbian ...
