BELIZE CITY -- As founder of New Hampshire Legal Assistance, George
Bruno's job was to represent poor people in a rich country. Now, as
Ambassador George Bruno, his job is to represent a rich country in a
nation of poor people.
Sentries stand guard beneath the palm trees outside both Bruno's
home and office. If he visits a school, particularly if the American
flags are flying from the fenders of his official vehicle, it creates
an uproar because it hints that aid may be forthcoming.
Last year, the headline in one tropical island newspaper
reported: "Visit of US Ambassador Bruno Shuts Out Crab Races."
Bruno is one of three New Hampshire people known to hold the title
