WENHAM -- When $1 million worth of marijuana plants was discovered
growing in the Great Wenham Swamp last month, people here wondered
how the cash crop could have escaped detection for so long.
But those who know about the dark parts of the sprawling
2,500-acre swamp in Wenham, Topsfield, Hamilton and Danvers know that
the spongy soil hides even more secrets.
The swamp, one of the largest in the state, is so difficult to
navigate dozens of people have gotten lost in it. Most are found
among the root balls of toppled trees and the clusters of marsh grass
that can grow six feet tall. Locals say any sense of direction
disappears the second the swamp engulfs a person.
