A team led by Raytheon Co. won a government contract yesterday to upgrade the nation's aging air traffic control system, a deal that could be worth $1 billion and will bring about 100 new engineering jobs to Massachusetts.

Already a leading supplier of airport radar systems, Raytheon won the job of replacing air traffic controllers' patchwork of 20-year-old equipment with new computers, displays and software at up to 371 commercial and military airports.
