CHICAGO -- Sen. John F. Kerry, scrambling to gain ground in his
race against Gov. William F. Weld, invoked his war record last night
in blasting Republicans on education issues in a speech at the
Democratic National Convention.
Kerry reached for combat metaphors in charging that the
"Dole-Gingrich Congress" abandoned children by proposing cuts in Head
Start, direct college loans and aid for primary and secondary
education.
While he praised Bob Dole's "extraordinary journey of recovery"
from his World War II injury as "a great story," Kerry said "war
itself tells another story" about helping colleagues in combat, he
said.
