ATLANTA -- Perhaps we should thank Carl Lewis for reminding us why
we didn't much like him the first time.
Hey, Carl: There are more than 5 billion people on the planet.
You just happen to be one of them.
The latest issue in the matter of Carl Lewis Vs. The World is
that now he wants to be a part of the 4 x 100-meter relay team that
will try for a gold medal Saturday night. In years past, any Olympic
track coach would have been pleased to have Lewis as his anchorman.
But this is 1996. Lewis is past his sprinting prime, and American
coach Erv Hunt also asks the following rhetorical question: "Um,
Carl, where were you when I held the tryouts for the squad?"
