Charles Jones was about to go on vacation in March when the
telephone rang at his home in Seabrook, Md. He was headed to Atlanta
for a few days with brothers Caldwell and Wil, and with his 38th
birthday a few weeks away, he must have figured his NBA career was
over.
It had been a good career, spanning 12 seasons with five teams who
wanted him for his defense. He had spent parts of nine of those
seasons with the Washington Bullets, and along the way had earned the
respect of the people who played with and against him as a dedicated
professional and a genuinely nice guy.
