For a while, it seemed like America was headed for class warfare this election year, what with all the talk of company downsizing and corporate responsibility.

You remember: In February, GOP presidential hopeful Pat Buchanan called to arms the "peasants with pitchforks" against "corporate butchers." A Newsweek cover story in March was titled: "Corporate Killers." In the cold days of the early Republican primaries, President Clinton and Bob Dole were tripping over each other in their eagerness to respond to all the untapped anger.

It surprised the sleepy liberals. It irritated the moneyed conservatives.
