Apple devotees used to be known as the movers and shakers of the computer industry.

Now they're trying to avoid being tagged with a new sobriquet: the Shakers.

As in the sect.

Consider the uncanny similarities between Macintosh diehards and the dying religious group.

There are only eight Shakers left in the United States (five women and three men). The reason for this population dearth is Shakers refuse to have offspring. Until 1994, Apple, too, refused to give out its "genetic code." The result: reproduction problems for both.

Shakers have limited relations with people outside their isolated community. Ditto for Apple users.
