A quiet renaissance is giving an economic and aesthetic boost to a long-moribund commercial area along the Charles River in Cambridge.

On a one-mile stretch of Memorial Drive, buildings that began their lives as factories early this century only to fall into disuse are being revived.

But instead of the auto assembly plants or warehouses they once were, the buildings are returning to life as spiffy corporate headquarters or lab space for some of the cutting edge young businesses that are fueling the city's explosive growth.
