Last year Americans in vast ecumenical numbers were turning to angels for counsel, comfort and assistance.

But, in the upwardly mobile manner of the '90s, the trendy are now scorning middle management, even the angelic kind, and knocking on the CEO's door. No less than God -- the subject of a spate of current best-selling books and two recent popular television specials -- is the favored heavenly presence this season.
