Genius Loci -- "the spirit of a place" -- is a new review column
that will appear from time to time, calling attention to previously
unreviewed books by regional authors or on subjects of regional
interest. This first edition samples notable books published
throughout the past year.
We suppose Massachusetts to be an urban state, which it is,
lacking the natural wonders we associate more readily with the West,
which it does not. "The Nature of Massachusetts" by Christopher
Leahy, John Hanson Mitchell and Thomas Conuel, and illustrated
beautifully by Lars Jonsson (Massachusetts Audubon
