Government-appointed election officials began counting ballots
yesterday in a pivotal election to determine who would lead the 1.4
million-member International Brotherhood of Teamsters into the next
century -- reformer Ron Carey or James P. Hoffa, son of legendary
Teamster boss Jimmy Hoffa.
About 485,000 ballots mailed in from Teamsters across the country
and in Canada are expected to take officials three days or more to
certify and count.
Most observers believe the election between Carey and Hoffa will
be close. Besides the top labor job, slates of candidates backing
either Carey or Hoffa are running for the union's powerful
international executive board.
