The evening Marc Anthony decided to become a singer was not so
different from all the others in the crowded East Harlem apartment of
his childhood. His father, a traditional Puerto Rican jibaro
musician, put the 9-year-old on the kitchen table during one of his
jam sessions, so he could sing along with the assembled musicians and
earn a buck or two.
But there was one difference that night -- his aunt stood crying
in the doorway. Seeing her that way frightened him because he
thought he had done something wrong, but then she hugged him and said
the song had been so beautifully done she couldn't help the tears.
