Teamsters reformer Ron Carey declared victory yesterday in his
battle with James P. Hoffa for the presidency of the 1.4-million
member union, a win seen by many as endorsing continued change not
only for the long-troubled union, but for organized labor in general.
"This is not a victory for one man or a slate of candidates.
It's a victory for all working people who want strong, honest
unions," Carey, who was seeking reelection as president, said
yesterday during a news conference before the final tally of nearly
500,000 votes was completed.
"This is a victory for continued reform of the Teamsters Union,"
he said at Teamsters' headquarters in downtown Washington. "We beat
