Prize time: Adrienne Rich has been selected as the winner of the
1996 Tanning Prize of $100,000, presented by the Academy of American
Poets. Judges for the award were poets Thom Gunn, Marilyn Hacker,
Daniel Hoffman, David Wagoner and Rosanna Warren.
Born in Baltimore in 1929, Rich has published some 15 volumes of
poetry. Among her best-known titles are "Diving into the Wreck," "The
Dream of a Common Language," "The Fact of a Doorframe" and "Time's
Power." She is also the author of four nonfiction books, including
works on motherhood, poetry and politics.
The Tanning Prize was established in 1994 by a gift of $2 million
to the academy from the painter Dorothea Tanning. Previous winners
