In June 1966, about a dozen Salt Lake City officials flew to Rome
to make their pitch to host the 1972 Winter Olympics. The city lost
that bid to Sapporo, Japan. Salt Lake City officials tried again for
the 1976, 1980 and 1998 Winter Games, but lost each time.
This week, more than 400 Salt Lake business and community leaders
flew to Budapest to be on hand as city officials present their
proposal to the International Olympic Committee today to host the
2002 Winter Games.
In its fifth Olympic bid, Salt Lake City is competing against
three cities -- Ostersund, Sweden; Sion, Switzerland; and Quebec
