This week, Health/Science inaugurates a monthly column on the science
of fitness and exercise.
Can a person literally run away from depression?
Probably not, but sufferers who get regular exercise can likely
find some relief from their mood symptoms.
Depression, which perhaps 30 percent of Americans can expect to
develop in their lifetime, is one of the most common of mental
illnesses: more than 9 million suffer from it in any six-month
period. Thankfully, with a combination of psychotherapy and
medication, it is also one of the most treatable.
And now, evidence is growing to suggest that regular exercise can
sometimes have an antidepressant effect comparable to other
treatments.
