While many Virginians are still basking in last autumn's victory
over Disney, 30 miles to the south another struggle is taking place
at Brandy Station Civil War Battlefield.
A private preservation group recently offered an unprecedented
$2.1 million for a key portion of the Brandy Station site.
Unfortunately, the offer was rejected by the developer, who hopes to
put a Formula One racetrack on a part of the battlefield.
If built, the 3.1-mile racetrack would forever alter the landscape
of northern Culpeper County. The 515 acres of tranquil fields where
Union and Confederate horsemen struggled and died on June 9, 1863,
would be replaced by concrete straightaways, grease pits and garages, ...
