In some TV commercials, Super Bowl fans will see Fred Astaire
tap-dancing with a vacuum cleaner. In others, they'll be wooed by
Porsche, AT&T and Coca-Cola. What fans won't see are ads for
products or services from local companies.
Gillette Co. and Reebok International Ltd. have advertised in past
Super Bowls but not this time. Fidelity Investments is giving Super
Bowl XXXI a good leaving-alone, and Polaroid Corp. says advertising
during the Super Bowl doesn't make nearly as much sense for its
product line as running ads during the World Series.
Not that their absence will matter to Fox, the television network
that will telecast this year's game on Jan. 26. Fox said it had sold
