CAMBRIDGE -- An MBTA bus without any passengers plunged into the
Charles River near the Massachusetts Avenue bridge at 10 last night,
killing the driver and prompting an intensive rescue effort in icy
waters by hundreds of safety personnel.
The westbound bus, which police said was not on its normal route,
veered across Memorial Drive and smashed through a railing before
plummeting into the river about 20 feet from the Cambridge shore,
eyewitnesses said.
The victim, an MBTA driver whom authorities would not identify
late last night, was pronounced dead at Massachusetts General
Hospital at 11:20 p.m., according to hospital spokeswoman Michelle
