NEW ORLEANS -- The last time someone from Massachusetts was
involved in a major conquest in New Orleans, he was showered with
contempt.
After the city fell to Union forces during the Civil War, Gen.
Benjamin Butler of Lowell was put in charge of the occupation. He
was so despised by New Orleanians that they painted the bottoms of
their chamber pots with his likeness, and they called him "The
Beast."
New Englanders who take part in next week's Super Bowl invasion
will get a better reception. They will find a city that takes a
daily potion of joie de vivre to get over its urban woes, a place
that realizes hospitality -- even to Yankees -- is vital to its
economy.
