When Sen. Bob Dole (R-Kan.) made his famous attack on Hollywood last month, outraged members of the filmmaking community responded instantly with a flood of impassioned rhetoric. All very predictable.

But in the midst of it all, no one seemed to notice that Hollywood during the '90s has undergone a significant, if not radical, transition -- both as an industry and as a culture. And the criticism may already be out of date.

"Bob Dole and people of his ilk are talking about a Hollywood of 10 years ago," says Jack Valenti, president of the Motion Picture Association of America and creator of its ratings systems. "The climate there now has changed."
