Red River Shipping Corp., with just two ships and only four front-
office employees counting owner John P. Morris III, survives in a
world of giant global companies by providing the services the big
guys don't want, and taking advantage of government and military
shipping programs.
The Rockville company doesn't fit the normal shipping stereotypes.
It is the only U.S.-flag line owned by African Americans. It is
perfectly happy to sail under the U.S. flag while the major carriers
scramble to fly under foreign flags, which generally are cheaper for
the carriers. Red River's ships are small compared with the ocean-
going fleets of almost any major line.
