Little by little, the federal government is easing its
restrictions on the export of encryption software, and the latest
company to benefit is Open Market Inc. of Cambridge.
The Commerce Department will allow Open Market to export its
OM-Transact Internet server software with an encryption feature that
is far more powerful than previously allowed. OM-Transact can be
used by businesses to sell products and services directly over the
Internet by exchanging sensitive financial data, such as credit card
numbers.
Win Treese, Open Market's director of security, said the
government made an exception for his firm because OM-Transact
