Some of my fondest birding memories are rooted in New Hampshire.
I won't soon forget the radiant red-headed woodpecker on the
guardrail of Bear Notch Road one Memorial Day. Or the prothonotary
warbler that met me as I stepped from the pier on Star Island. Or
the spruce grouse that tarried in front of me as I staggered under a
heavy pack on the Appalachian Trail. Or the barred owl that scared
my dad, brother, Joe Rubbicco, and me the first time it wailed at
Province Pond. With the black flies and raccoons tap dancing in the
lean-to and me flailing awake from a nightmare and smacking Joe ...
