Article: Neglect policy revised DSS: No charges filed before parental input

State officials yesterday announced they will no longer level charges of child abuse or neglect without talking to the parent involved, a direct response to a case involving a Sherborn doctor cited for neglect after leaving her children in her car for less than two minutes.

The state Department of Social Services acknowledged earlier this week that its social workers sometimes file complaints against parents without interviewing them, then send form letters saying incorrectly that family interviews were part of their investigation.
