LAS VEGAS -- Oscar De La Hoya didn't want to hide the bruises
around his left eye Saturday night, but he may want to hide how they
got there. Unfortunately for him, there are no sunglasses dark
enough for that.
Although De La Hoya wore his first bruises from a prize fight with
honor after he had defeated Miguel Angel Gonzalez, his next opponent
saw just how his eye became half closed and what had made his swollen
cheek turn a dark blue, and Pernell Whitaker will not forget.
De La Hoya dominated Gonzalez, the former World Boxing Council
lightweight champion, for all but one of the first eight rounds of
their 12-round fight for the WBC super lightweight title at the
Thomas and Mack Center. But ...
