The long-anticipated boom in genetic engineering of plants is well
under way, with farmers commercially growing nine genetically
engineered crops, from potatoes to papaya, and more than 30 others
are under development.
Green Giant's vegetarian Harvest Burgers are already made from
soybeans genetically engineered to improve weed control, and other
Pillsbury foods, such as Niblets corn and Old El Paso tortillas, may
be close behind.
But yesterday, two scientists on the front lines of biotechnology
research warned that the industry's rush to market the new products
is leaving a skittish public behind. They called on the industry to
