Leanna Gavin hadn't had even a stuffy nose when she was 6 months
old and started day care. After that, she got one cold after
another, and each ended with a painful ear infection. In all, Leanna
was sick seven or eight times in her first year.
Her mother, Jane Gavin, a customer services manager in Westwood,
said she knew Leanna's contact with other children in day care meant
more illnesses at a young age, though she hopes for some payback in
the end. Perhaps, she said, her daughter will have a sturdier immune
system when she enters school.
"It's more important that she have good attendance in school than
day care," said Gavin of her daughter, now 2 1/2 and who remains at
the day-care ...
