Article: Dr. James McGuire, first student at UMass Medical School; at 48

Dr. James L. McGuire of Westborough, the first student accepted to the the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and who helped preserve funding for the school during a dramatic appearance at the State House in 1970, died Saturday at Maine Medical Center in Portland after an apparent heart attack in North Conway, N.H. He was 48.

A rheumatologist, Dr. McGuire was chairman of the department of medicine at Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge and coauthor of the book "Living with Rheumatoid Arthritis." He also was widely published in medical journals.

He was born and raised in Dedham. He graduated from UMass-Amherst and was selected to become the first student at the UMass Medical School ...
