A federal judge yesterday cleared the way for New England dairy
farmers to start getting paid about 25 cents a gallon more for their
milk, a price increase that some area supermarkets say will be passed
on at least partially to consumers.
Although officials from the region's largest dairy cooperative
said a price increase at the retail level is not warranted, a
spokesman for Shaw's Supermarkets said milk prices will go up next
week when the new regulatory system takes effect.
"We will be increasing our price," said Bernard Rogan, the Shaw's
spokesman. "Most of the food retailers will be increasing their
prices."
