George Seldes, 104, a legendary reporter, foreign correspondent
and magazine publisher who was a pioneer in the field of press
criticism, died July 2 at a hospital in Windsor, Vt. He had a heart
ailment.
Mr. Seldes, who lived in Hartland, Vt., was born in what is now
Vineland, N.J., where his father was the co-founder of an utopian
community. He grew up there and in Pittsburgh. He attended Harvard
University.
He began his journalism career in 1909 as a $3.50-a-week cub
reporter for the Pittsburgh Leader. Over the next seven years, he
covered local news, once nearly losing his job for reporting that a
large proportion of those attending a speech by the Rev. Billy Sunday
